World class training - International dual award PhDs in Plant & Soil Science now open

These new studentships offer a unique opportunity to join a vibrant and collaborative research community spanning two world-class institutions in Sheffield, UK and Sydney, Australia.

Arthur Willis Environment Centre

We are excited to announce a new round of dual award PhD studentships as part of an ongoing BBSRC-funded international research partnership between the Plants, Photosynthesis and Soil (PPS) research group at the 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏ of Sheffield (UoS) and the  at Western Sydney 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏ (WSU).

Applications are now open for the advertised projects (below) each of which are supervised by leading academics from both PPS and HIE with two projects (one at UoS and one at HIE) to receive studentship funding. These projects reflect our shared commitment to advancing excellence in plant and soil science through collaboration and represent an outstanding opportunity to join an international research network and contribute to globally relevant scientific challenges.

The studentships will offer a unique opportunity to join a vibrant and collaborative research community spanning two world-class institutions. They are designed to support cutting-edge research in plant and soil sciences, while deepening the strategic partnership between UoS and WSU. This initiative builds on the successful collaborations established during our joint symposium and workshop held at Halifax Hall last summer.

Each project will be jointly supervised by academics from both institutions, ensuring cross-institutional mentorship and expertise. Successful candidates will be primarily based at either Sheffield or Western Sydney but will spend a minimum of one year conducting research at the partner institution - gaining valuable international experience and insight.

Students will benefit from access to world-leading research facilities and a breadth of expertise across both institutions, including cutting-edge technologies in plant phenotyping, physiology, metabolomics, molecular biology and soil science. This joint program offers an exceptional training environment for developing the next generation of leaders in plant and soil science. Graduates will be awarded a prestigious dual PhD degree from both UoS and WSU.

For specific enquiries about a project contact the supervisor via the project links. If you have more general enquiries about the scheme, email Prof. Katie Field. Deadline for applications is 26th May 2025.
